The Faith of a Camel

Matthew 19 Summary

Summary:

As Jesus traveled to the region of Judea, He once again was tested by the religious leaders. This time, they questioned Him about the law concerning “divorce.” Jesus responded to their questioning by showing that God’s original intent for marriage was, “One man, one woman, for life.” Divorce was never in God’s plan but because of the hardness of man’s heart, Moses permitted it.

Matthew also records how much Jesus loves children. While the disciples tried to keep the children away, Jesus insisted they be brought to Him for prayer.

After praying for the children, Jesus was approached by a “rich young ruler.” The young man questioned Jesus regarding how good someone must be to earn eternal life. Jesus knew this young man was self-righteous and showed him that he is not as good as he thinks he is. It is impossible for a self-sufficient, self-righteous man to enter into heaven.

Jesus reference to it being “easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God,” was not so much referring to material possessions but to those who are rich in self-righteousness. Those who believe they can earn heaven without God. It is only when we give up our righteousness and receive the righteousness of Christ, will we receive salvation.

Consideration

In verse 26, Jesus said, “…with God all things are possible.” You might be facing a situation that is humanly impossible. If you are looking to your strength, wisdom or resources, you will never succeed. But if you bring your challenges to Jesus, nothing will be impossible. What challenges are you facing? Consider giving it to Jesus in prayer and watch Him do the impossible.

Prayer
Lord, forgive me for ever doubting your abilities. Give me faith to believe you can do anything, even the situation I am currently facing. Amen!
